A timber construction initiative in Upper Lusatia by crafts for crafts

Can the energy sector be the sole backbone of structural change?
No! Because we are traditionally an energy region, but also much more.
We took on this question and, as expected, were quickly able to sketch a different picture: Above all, Lusatia is also a craft! The trade, which is often said to have the much-cited golden soil and which represents a large part of the employment subject to social security contributions in the district of Görlitz. According to the Dresden Chamber of Crafts, there are 4,376 craft businesses in the Unpayable Land (as of December 31, 2021). This means that there are 17.6 businesses for every 1,000 inhabitants. This comparison shows the importance of the economic sector for the region.
But what can the craft do and where is it developing? How do customers and markets behave in times of climate change, sustainability discussions and digitization? Does everyone know about the opportunities that arise - or do we not have time to sharpen the ax because we have to hook wood? In order to find answers and to formulate offers for the trade, the district of Görlitz commissioned the ENO and GRANTIRO Initiative GmbH to look at wood with all its facets and possibilities as part of a timber construction initiative in Upper Lusatia. What started in Kodersdorf, traditionally anchored in Niesky and has to be thought of from north to south, we see as great potential in its entire value chain in the district: wood as the building material of the future.
Now we are a long way from wanting to show the seasoned craftsman how to run his business and what products he will need in the future. We just want to invite everyone who has a connection to wood to participate in this future topic. As a timber construction satellite in Upper Lusatia, we want to contribute our regional strengths to the Saxon timber construction competence network and benefit from the Saxon structures and competences. Topics such as the traditional building of tomorrow, new living concepts and products as well as technology and knowledge transfer should be on the agenda.
TRADITIONAL, but open to DIFFERENCE and NEW , we want to plunge into this adventure with an open mind.
Always looking for answers to questions like: Is it possible to develop a new product the half-timbered house and industrial wooden house buildings of the modern age according to the architect Konrad Wachsmann How can you digitize the material and products made of wood? How can a center of practice-tested, craft-based intelligence with work, digitization and innovation spaces be created and which trades can be combined here? What moves tomorrow's customers and what is our answer to this need? We want to answer this and much more together with partners from business and science in Upper Lusatia and our sister satellites in Eibenstock and Leipzig. As a strong Saxon network and as an important European timber location.
