The (almost) forgotten anniversary - A very personal guest contribution by Holger Freymann, Head of District Development

Around August 1st, I feel a bit melancholy about my work. It's the district's birthday, the NOL turned 9 (from 1994 to 2008) and the current one celebrated its 13th. This year, however, there was a special anniversary. Rather quiet, something forgotten and I know that the "jubilarian" will escape with "... oh, Freymann" when he reads this. Nevertheless and precisely because of this - I am writing this small blog post (as an interim conclusion) with great admiration, a lot of gratitude and a little humility.
Who is it about? Bernd Lange had on 1.8. his 20th anniversary as District Administrator. When he surprisingly took over this job in what was then NOL (Niederschlesische Oberlausitzkreis) on August 1, 2001 after 11 years as mayor of Rothenburg/OL, he not only became my "big boss", but also a special companion in my working life and also a little bit about it out. Pragmatic, authentic, down-to-earth, with a lot of expertise and great vision, he not only managed the NOL for 7 years, he also left his mark on the district of Görlitz. For me personally, he was not only the boss, but also an adviser and guide in so many things. The circle, its development and myself would not be where we are today without him. He gave and gives you the freedom to act and always the necessary backing for it.
As a district administrator, you have a lot on your plate. And even more responsibility and issues for which you hold your head. There is the administration as a really complex structure, the responsibility for almost 1,700 employees who provide so many, often complex and complicated services for our people here. There is the struggle for the best technical solutions in the many areas of law that we as a district have to develop. There is the political stage that needs to be played in the district, in the state, but also in the federal government and in the EU. And, right now, there are also the many crises, from bird flu, ASF, floods, storms to Corona, which have to be overcome
I have a lot of confidence in myself, but district administrator really wouldn't be my job. Especially since the personal has moved so far back over so many years, had to move back. Nevertheless, he still had and still has time for his family (of which he rightly speaks with great pride), for sheep, the oven... and also for traveling to countries so far away (and his lively reports about it). So he has remained human and will remain so.
In 20 years you experience so many things together that you could fill volumes with them. About the joint battles, the short and long business trips, the many meetings and the struggle to find the best solutions. But especially from the many small and large personal moments. Already today I will miss his "Na Freymann, alles klar...". Because in a year it will really be over with the district administrator. Until then, we will still shape and use this time together.
And - THANK YOU for these 20 years, boss.
Holger Freyman
District Development Manager
