What an exciting afternoon that was for me. Yesterday at 1 p.m. I wanted to sit at the computer and listen to the live stream of the district council. The technology was ready. Then a call at 12.45 p.m. - I urgently have to go to Görlitz again.
The excitement was great when I received the information a few days ago "We can do volunteer work again in 2021". Very good. I asked Steffi, my wife, this question yesterday. And she encouraged me in this matter. My first appointment today was 8:30 a.m. with the location "District Office Görlitz". Strange feelings crept over me. Somehow strange. This "conversation" could be a bit excited and different than in the last 15 years.
Is it just me?
Forward, always forward - or not?
"After 10 years I'm looking for something new" - these were my words when I was allowed to take over the post of managing director of the ENO in 2005. I've been in this role for a few years now. And it's fun. Diverse, exciting, formative and of course sometimes exhausting. One thing is certain - there is no planability in the ENO. But they also exist - the moments when the pulse can be heard too fast in the ear, the fingers have to hold on to something and the coffee is the wrong drink to calm down.

ATN is a special machine and plant manufacturer specializing in application technology and automation. The company manufactures state-of-the-art components and production systems for international customers. Very often one reads about the importance of voluntary work in a region. Also in the district of Görlitz. Be it in public functions, in clubs, in the community or just because. Right - the many players are priceless. On so many levels, in so many areas.
It looks sad.
If we take a sober look at the many bars on our district and its inhabitants in terms of age, I could write about it very factually at this point. The region is - compared to so many other regions - relatively old. The extrapolations show the strengthening of the trend, political decision-makers only know these statistics about us.
In order to meet the increasing demand of the international market, the subsidiary of the Swiss SKAN AG started production in Görlitz-Hagenwerder at the beginning of 2014. The manufacturing skills of the modern company lie in the processing of stainless steel, in assembly and control cabinet construction as well as the complex tests and approvals according to pharmaceutical standards.
The business juniors are worldwide. An excellent network of young entrepreneurs, a strong voice of the young economy. Also with us in the district of Görlitz. After laughing and discussing a lot in a small group in front of the computer yesterday evening, the decision was made to write a few sentences about the Görlitz Junior Economics.
District - that's always a term. What is behind it? What opportunities, but also difficulties does such a structure bring with it for someone like me? From a purely formal point of view, it is an administrative construct - a structure in which there are several municipalities and cities. For me it's more. It's my homeland.

But we quickly realized that we would not do justice to our priceless country. Numbers alone cannot describe our homeland. We've really achieved a lot in the past few decades. Today it is not only the beautiful landscapes that make our district attractive. Committed companies, exciting research institutions, tourist offers with a magnet effect and plenty of freedom to develop are now typical of our region. Above all, however, it is the people who fill all this with life.
Who would have thought. In recent years there have been an increasing number of initiatives and, above all, good stories about people coming back to our region. What is behind such stories?
